The JAE is the only South-African accredited journal that is devoted entirely to African elections. We are aiming for international acreditation in the near future.
The journal welcomes scholarly papers on any aspect of elections in Africa, be it an empirical analysis or a theoretical piece. We also consider quality opinion pieces and book reviews by experts with an interest in African elections.
The journal is published twice a year and is distributed in Africa and beyond. It is available for free in electronic format and for a small fee for the print version. The JAE is dedicated to building a shared knowledge culture in Africa. Our Creative Commons licence is CC BY 4.0 and authors retain copyright over their papers.
Founded in 2002 and run by the Electoral Institute for Sustainable Democracy in Africa (EISA), the JAE seeks to engage scholars and practitioners in the field of elections in Africa. Submissions that pass the initial screening are peer-reviewed. Our expert editors work with authors who are invited to revise their papers to ensure a high standard in our published journal.
We currently publish only in English but hope to cater for French in the future.
EISA, the publisher, co-ordinates the administrative side of the journal (funding, budget, production, schedules, marketing, distribution, and listings on databases). The JAE’s editorial board has full independence and comprises academic experts in relevant fields in Africa and beyond.
