The JAE is the only South African-accredited journal devoted entirely to African elections. We are aiming for international accreditation in the future. Founded in 2002 and run by the Electoral Institute for Sustainable Democracy in Africa (EISA), the JAE seeks to engage scholars and practitioners in the field of elections in Africa.
The JAE is dedicated to building a shared knowledge culture in Africa. Our Creative Commons licence is CC BY 4.0 and authors retain copyright over their papers.
We welcome scholarly papers on any aspect of elections in Africa, be it an empirical analysis or a theoretical piece. We also consider quality opinion pieces and book reviews by experts with an interest in African elections.
The journal is published twice a year electronically, with minimal printed copies. We currently publish only in English.
Submissions that pass an initial technical screening may be selected for peer review. Our expert editors work with authors to ensure a high standard in our published journal.
EISA co-ordinates the administrative side of the journal. The JAE’s editorial board is made up of academic experts from across the world and Africa. The board has full independence in its publishing decisions.
